Continuous and safe planned
In its meeting on February 22nd, the magistrate of the science city of Darmstadt commissioned the mobility office to improve cycling on the Radnebenroute Herdweg (Hermannstraße/Hermannstraße/Theodor-Heuss-Straße/Inselstraße).
"We check all traffic planner options that contribute to an increase in traffic safety on this route and make them attractive for cycling," said Mayor Hanno Benz. The decisive factor here is the examination of crossing areas, traffic law restrictions, road cross -sections, visibility, parking spaces including the associated safety rooms and a minimization of holding for bicycle traffic. In suitable sections, it is also checked whether bicycle roads can be realized.
A more attractive cycling route through the quarters must be designed that it does not become equally attractive for potential car passage or creep traffic. Here, one must pay attention to one -consistant traffic planner design and the effective use of possible traffic law restrictions. In addition, connections to the main route network are checked and solutions are developed that make the secondary route more accessible and make it more visible to both the cycling and motorized traffic.
“Cycling routes on side routes are serious alternatives in the overall system. Mobility peace is only possible if such a route is consistently planned in terms of continuousness and security and does not allow any gaps. Due to the expected impact on the resting traffic along the route, the implementation will have to be linked to parking management in the Paulusviertel, ”said Mobility Director Paul Georg Wandrey.
The testing of the HERDWEG Radnebenroute can be seen in connection with the ongoing discussion about a bicycle traffic facility in Heinrichstrasse. This is unattractive due to the traffic load without a cycling system for cycling. Adjustments in the nodes of Heinrichstrasse would worsen the performance of the same for motorized traffic. For the most part, there is no satisfactory bicycle traffic system due to the cramped road width. Depending on the section, only a one -sided bike path and sometimes no bike path or protective strips would be possible.
