State program supports better networking of support services for families
Darmstadt has received a funding commitment from the state program "Prevention Chains Hesse – Successful Upbringing, Living Children's Rights". This will allow for the future financing of staff positions for the development and expansion of so-called prevention chains.
According to the city, the approved funding amounts to up to €134,700 . The development of the municipal prevention networks is scheduled to begin in July 2026 .
A key component of the strategy against child poverty
Mayor and Social Affairs Officer Barbara Akdeniz describes the funding as an important step in the fight against child poverty.
The application originated from the Darmstadt Alliance against Child Poverty, a collaborative effort between administration, welfare organizations, academia, politics, and civil society initiatives. Its aim is to provide children with better opportunities regardless of their social background.
Early support for families
One focus of the program is on providing early support to families – for example around pregnancy and birth – as well as improving the participation opportunities of children from households at risk of poverty.
Existing services should be more closely linked. These include, among others, early intervention services, family centers, daycare centers, schools, and community-based networks.
Focus on children up to ten years old
The planned measures are primarily aimed at children up to the age of ten and families in difficult life situations. The goal is to facilitate access to counseling and support services, expand opportunities for participation by children and parents, and better tailor measures to the needs of individual neighborhoods.
