Leaning in the forest in the forest cemetery to commemorate the resistance against the Nazi dictatorship on July 20th
For the 81st anniversary of the failed attack on Adolf Hitler, the science city of Darmstadt commemorates on Sunday, July 20, 2025 , the brave women and men who rose against the National Socialist regime. At 11 a.m., City Councilor Rita Beller resigned a wreath at the memorial in the forest cemetery .
"Uprising of conscience"
Mayor Hanno Benz emphasizes the lasting importance of resistance:
"Never was the memory of the men and women who dared to protrude against the Nazi dictatorship as important as today. July 20, 1944 was an uprising of conscience, based on a long unknown civilian resistance network."
With a view to the actors of July 20, Benz further explains:
"They were not a 'traitor' or 'little clique', as the Nazi propaganda claimed. They were brave people who risked their lives for freedom, democracy and law. Your civil courage, their foresight and attitude remain an example today. Democracy needs to be democratic and democrats."
Memory of Wilhelm Leuschner
At the center of the local commemoration is also the native of Darmstadt Wilhelm Leuschner , who between 1933 and 1944 built up a far -reaching civilian resistance network with hundreds of trustees all over Germany. His commitment remains a central chapter of the German history of democracy.
Public commemoration
The city of Darmstadt invites all citizens and media representatives to the memorial event.
