On the 81st anniversary of the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler, the city of Darmstadt will commemorate the courageous women and men who stood up against the Nazi regime Sunday, July 20, 2025. 11 a.m. City Councillor Rita Beller will lay a wreath on behalf of the city at the memorial in the Waldfriedhof .
"Revolt of Conscience"
Mayor Hanno Benz emphasizes the enduring significance of the resistance:
“Never before has the memory of the men and women who dared to rise up against the Nazi dictatorship been as important as it is today. July 20, 1944, was an uprising of conscience, supported by a long-unknown civilian resistance network.”
Referring to the individuals involved in the July 20th plot, Benz further explains:
“They were not ‘traitors’ or a ‘small clique,’ as Nazi propaganda claimed. They were courageous people who risked their lives for freedom, democracy, and justice. Their civic courage, their vision, and their stance remain a model even today. Democracy needs resilient democrats who act in a timely manner.”
In memory of Wilhelm Leuschner
Local commemorations also focus on Wilhelm Leuschner , who between 1933 and 1944 built a far-reaching civilian resistance network with hundreds of trusted individuals throughout Germany. His commitment remains a pivotal chapter in the history of German democracy.
