City informs about redesign – single-span girder construction replaces original bridge concept
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, provided an update on the Rheinstraße bridge reconstruction project on Friday (March 28). The plan is to build a single-span girder bridge without support pillars in the railway area – a redesign intended to save both time and money. Head of Mobility Paul Georg Wandrey emphasized: "The new construction method allows for completion two years earlier than the original concept."
The original multi-span girder design would have required a significantly longer construction time due to numerous dependencies on railway operations. The new design aims to reduce railway-related restrictions while simultaneously achieving greater independence from the overhead line below. Completion is planned for the end of 2029 , with the dismantling of the one-way street ring scheduled for early 2031 .
Construction planning and approval on schedule
The new structure will be within the existing planning approval process . An amendment application is currently being prepared; a new approval review is not required. The tendering process for the new structural design is underway, and the project start with the new planners is scheduled for May 2025. Preliminary work already completed, such as sewer connections, will be integrated into the new design.
Close cooperation with Deutsche Bahn
in conjunction with DB InfraGO AG . The demolition of the old bridge is scheduled to take place during a planned closure in 2027 , followed by an additional closure in early 2028 for the installation of the new bridge. Ongoing communication with the railway company will help to coordinate the approval processes at an early stage.
Impact on traffic and public transport
rail replacement bus service (SEV) is planned for the period from demolition to completion , which is expected to last approximately one and a half years . To shorten this period, the new track layout and overhead lines will be pre-installed.
Simultaneously, improvements are being made to the one-way ring road, such as permanent yellow markings and demarcated white lines. These works are intended to stabilize traffic flow until the new infrastructure is completed.
Project website will go online in April
To better inform the public, a project website launched in April 2025, where regular progress updates will be provided. A quarterly project report available there.
