Akdeniz: "New equipment boosts self-confidence at the start of school"
The Kiwanis Club Darmstadt once again carried out its successful schoolbag campaign this year, making the start of school easier for 224 children from families receiving social benefits. The children received high-quality schoolbags along with matching accessories – including pencil cases, gym bags, and lunchboxes.
“It is very important that children are not disadvantaged when it comes to the basic equipment they need to start school. That's why I greatly appreciate the initiative to support participation, which has been running for many years. With new materials and good equipment, learning is easier, and the children go to their first day of school with confidence and their school bags,” emphasizes Mayor and Head of Social Services Barbara Akdeniz.
The school bags are being distributed to children whose parents receive welfare benefits in close cooperation with the city's daycare centers. The necessary funds for purchasing the materials are raised through donations and fundraising activities organized by the Kiwanis Club. The handover took place in a festive ceremony with a colorful program in the auditorium of the Luise-Büchner-School.
“With this initiative, we want to improve children’s starting opportunities in their school life,” explains Kiwanis member Konstanze Fritsch. “The children not only receive high-quality equipment, but also experience a wonderful day – something they will remember.”
The Kiwanis Club's schoolbag campaign is an example of active social commitment and a strong signal for educational equity in Darmstadt.
