Exhibition "Place for new sculpture Darmstadt - Funded by Merck" shows sculptures in the great outdoors for a year
On Whit Monday, June 9, 2025, the new sculpture path in the Mühlbachaue will be officially opened at 11 a.m. Under the title "Place for new sculpture Darmstadt - Funded by Merck", the Freundeskreis presents new sculpture Darmstadt e. V. In cooperation with the city of Darmstadt, contemporary works by five renowned artists. The exhibition runs until May 31, 2026.
Inauguration with music and tour
The opening at the Hindemithstraße / Aumühlenweg is accompanied musically by the Symphonic Wind Orchestra of TSG Wixhausen . Following the greeting by Karsten Bliesener, chairman of the Freundeskreis, and greetings from Mayor Hanno Benz, City Councilor Michael Kolmer and Merck-speaker Tanja Zocher, curator Prof. Dr. Astrid von Luxburg in the concept of the exhibition. After that, a tour with artist talks invites you to meet the works and artists.
Five sculptures in the wild
The Mühlbachaue becomes an outdoor exhibition room for one year. Are shown (over-) life-size works made of wood, steel, corten steel and sandstone from:
- Peter Kunkel
- Joachim Mennicken
- Gabriele von Lutzau
- Georg Friedrich Wolf
- Faxe M. Müller
The exhibition area around the Aumühle retention basin combines nature experience and artistic intervention. From 2026, an expansion of the art path to the turning loop on the Dreieichweg is planned.

The Freundeskreis New Sculpture thanks for the organizational and practical support from the magistrate of the science city of Darmstadt, especially the green space office. The project is made possible by the generous promotion of science and technology company Merck as the main sponsor.
