The exhibition “Place for New Sculpture Darmstadt – sponsored by MERCK” will showcase sculptures in the open air for one year
On Whit Monday, June 9, 2025, at 11 a.m., the new sculpture trail in the Mühlbachaue will be officially opened. Under the title "Place for New Sculpture Darmstadt – supported by MERCK," the Friends of New Sculpture Darmstadt association, in cooperation with the City of Darmstadt, presents contemporary works by five renowned artists. The exhibition runs until May 31, 2026.
Inauguration with music and tour
The opening at the intersection of Hindemithstraße and Aumühlenweg will be accompanied musically by the TSG Wixhausen Symphonic Wind Orchestra . Following a welcome address by Karsten Bliesener, Chairman of the Friends Association, and greetings from Mayor Hanno Benz, City Councillor Michael Kolmer, and Merck representative Tanja Zocher, curator Prof. Dr. Astrid von Luxburg introduce the exhibition concept. Afterwards, a guided tour with artist talks will offer visitors the opportunity to directly engage with the artworks and meet the artists.
Five sculptures in the open air
The Mühlbach floodplain will be transformed into an open-air exhibition space for one year. On display will be (larger-than-)life-size works in wood, steel, Corten steel, and sandstone by:
- Peter Kunkel
- Joachim Mennicken
- Gabriele von Lutzau
- Georg Friedrich Wolf
- Faxe M. Müller
The exhibition area around the Aumühle retention basin combines nature experiences with artistic interventions. An extension of the art trail to the turning loop at Dreieichweg is planned from 2026.
Thanks to supporters and the city
The Friends of New Sculpture would like to thank the Darmstadt City Council, and in particular the Parks and Green Spaces Department, for their organizational and practical support. The project is made possible by the generous funding of the science and technology company Merck as the main sponsor.
