The final brochure showcases 23 years of urban development in the Kranichstein funding area
The "Kranichstein High-Rise Quarter – New Image" project was selected as one of the 15 best initiatives in the nationwide "Social City 2025" and received an honorable mention. Over 100 projects from across Germany were submitted. The award ceremony took place on May 6th at the Berlin City Mission.
Alongside the award, the City of Darmstadt published the final brochure for the federal-state program "Social City" for the Kranichstein funding area. Between 2000 and 2023, numerous measures to improve housing and quality of life were implemented with a total volume of more than ten million euros from the federal government, the state of Hesse, and the city.
Key projects include:
- the new building of the Chillmo youth café
- the transformation of the Brentano complex into a city park with a sun deck
- the creation of a town square on the redesigned Bartningstraße
- diverse participation formats for citizens
Mayor Barbara Akdeniz emphasizes: “With this final brochure, we look back on 23 years of dedicated neighborhood and urban development. The close cooperation between the administration, the neighborhood workshop, and the citizens was crucial for the success.”
Planning Director Michael Kolmer emphasizes: “The redesign of the high-rise district shows how targeted image building and citizen-oriented planning can lead to visible improvements. The award at the ‘Social City’ prize confirms this approach.”
