The municipality is relying on hot water foam methods to combat the problem
Nauheim. The Mediterranean ant species *Tapinoma magnum* , also known as the large glandular ant, is increasingly spreading in Germany – now also in Nauheim. This was announced by the local council. The species, which is not dangerous to humans, is known for forming so-called supercolonies, which can undermine the soil and thus potentially cause damage.
According to Mayor Marc Friedrich, the presence of the invasive ant in a limited area within the municipality was confirmed by an expert report from the Institute for Pest Control in Reinheim. Based on this report, targeted control measures were initiated.
Limited occurrence in five streets
So far, Tapinoma magnum only been detected in the following areas of the municipality:
- Forest path
- School Street
- Forest Road
- In Gehren
- Berzallee
Whether private properties are also affected is still unclear, according to the expert report. The local council therefore requests all property owners to be extra vigilant and offer their support.
Treatment with hot water foam
The recommended method for control is the hot water foam method , in which boiling water is mixed with plant additives such as coconut oil or cornstarch. This creates a stable layer of foam, the heat from which acts over a longer period and is intended to control the ant population.
The measures are being carried out by a contracted specialist company and are regularly reviewed. The aim is to combat the infestation as effectively as possible, but within a limited timeframe. The municipality is also in contact with other affected communities.
Mayor Friedrich announces that the procedure will be adapted if necessary: "Should it turn out that the method is insufficient, the further course of action will be reassessed."
