City adjusts signaling program for increased safety and improved traffic flow
The traffic light system at the intersection of Rheinstraße and Neckarstraße in Darmstadt has been equipped with new control software. The aim of the upgrade is to increase road safety, improve traffic flow, and reduce conflicts between different road users.
Adaptation to new traffic management
The new traffic light programming takes into account the changed space constraints resulting from the installation of a cycle path. Optimized signal timing has created additional time buffers in the traffic flow.
Public transport was also taken into account during the adjustments. Buses and trains should be able to pass through the junction more reliably in the future.
Traffic jams led to conflicts
In the past, traffic jams regularly occurred in the area of the intersection, especially in the mornings and early evenings. These sometimes extended beyond the junction with Adelungstraße and, in isolated cases, as far as the next traffic light at Elisabethenstraße.
The resulting traffic jams obstructed visibility, leading to conflicts between turning cars and cyclists with right-of-way along Neckarstraße. In some cases, this also resulted in accidents.
First positive effects are visible
Head of Transport Paul Georg Wandrey explained that it was important to achieve a concrete improvement here. According to the city, initial observations after a one-week trial period already show positive developments: traffic jams occur less frequently, are shorter overall, and clear up more quickly.
The impact on road safety will continue to be monitored and evaluated.
Part of a larger transport project
This measure is part of the continuation of the traffic experiment regarding cycle path routing in Neckarstrasse and Heidelberger Strasse.
According to the city, the new traffic light control system is also a first result of the traffic simulation on Kasinostraße. It is intended to demonstrate the potential of well-coordinated traffic light sequences for more efficient traffic flow.
