Wilhelm-Leuschner-Straße is now more pedestrian-friendly / Adaptation implemented at the initiative of the city
Griesheim. Pedestrians in Griesheim city center can look forward to shorter waiting times: Since this week, a new, pedestrian-friendly traffic light system Wilhelm-Leuschner-Straße (B26) .
The intersections affected are Schillerstraße , Friedrich-Ebert-Straße , Hofmannstraße , Schönweibergasse and Jahnstraße . Previously, the traffic lights only turned green after the request button was pressed – anyone who pressed the button too late had to wait for a full traffic light cycle.
With the new regulation, the pedestrian traffic light will automatically turn green as soon as the parallel traffic from the side streets also has a green light. This eliminates the need to wait and press the button.
A wish expressed through citizen participation was implemented.
The measure stems from suggestions made during public participation in the city center development process . Many residents of Griesheim had expressed a desire for a more pedestrian-friendly traffic flow on Wilhelm-Leuschner-Straße.
Since the road in question is a federal highway , the responsibility does not lie with the city of Griesheim itself. However, the city administration initiated the project with the lower traffic authority , which issued a traffic regulation order for the reprogramming of the traffic lights at the end of 2024. The implementation has now been carried out by Hessen Mobil .
The five affected intersections were specifically chosen because that's where most pedestrians cross the road.
