New exhibition showcases the historical interior of the church from the years 1851 and 1912
What did the Trinity Church in Eberstadt look like more than a hundred years ago? What colors, ornaments, and furnishing details characterized the interior? A new exhibition provides answers to these questions using digital 3D reconstructions.
The exhibition will open on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 11 a.m. in the Evangelical Trinity Church in Darmstadt-Eberstadt. The event will take place as part of the Europe-wide Day of Foundations 2026.
Two historical states reconstructed
The focus is on the more than two years of research and reconstruction work by Eberstadt-based industrial designer James Harrison. Based on historical photographs, building plans and archival documents, he digitally reconstructed two historical states of the church interior.
The first reconstruction shows the interior after the renovation of 1851. The second depicts the Art Nouveau church designed by the Darmstadt architect Friedrich Pützer after the reconstruction of 1912.
The Art Nouveau version was reconstructed in particularly great detail. Historical photographs and original design drawings from the parish archives served as the basis for this reconstruction. The earlier version of the church interior was also reconstructed using historical documents. Despite the limited source material, proportions, furnishings, and atmosphere could be taken into account.

Local history brought to life digitally
The exhibition demonstrates how historical research and digital design can be combined. The reconstructions make changes to the church interior visible and allow a virtual glimpse into the building's past states.
With this exhibition, the Dotter Foundation is participating in the Day of Foundations 2026. This Europe-wide day of action focuses on the work of foundations and their commitment in social, cultural and scientific fields.
