The regional government is calling for a cessation of water withdrawals
Southern Hesse – The ongoing drought is increasingly putting a strain on the region's waterways. Despite occasional rain showers, the situation is worsening at many streams in southern Hesse. The environmental departments of the Darmstadt Regional Council, together with their colleagues in Wiesbaden and Frankfurt, are therefore calling for responsible water use .
Many streams are already experiencing critically low water levels. The three environmental departments are asking residents to contact their respective local water authorities about possible restrictions or water withdrawal bans . For example, the lower water authority of the Hochtaunus district issued a general order on July 10th prohibiting all water withdrawals from surface waters such as streams, ponds, and lakes until November 30, 2025 .
It is recommended to refrain from water withdrawal during periods of low water
As soon as water levels reach low-water flow rates water withdrawals should generally be avoided – even if no explicit prohibitions have been issued. Current water levels and flow rates can be viewed on the website of the Hessian State Agency for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG) :

Garden irrigation: Using rainwater
Environmental authorities recommend using only collected rainwater resources particularly sparingly .
“We ask you to adhere to these regulations in the interest of treating nature with care,” the environmental departments of the three regional councils appeal to the public.
