From August 14th to 18th: Family-friendly festival with live music, film tent and shuttle service
The long-established Weiterstadt Open Air Film Festival will once again transform the Braunshardter Tännchen into an open-air summer cinema in 2025. From August 14th to 18th, the 49th festival will screen around 200 short films from all over the world – selected from more than 3,000 submissions. A diverse family program will be offered, including live music, children's films, food stalls, and a free shuttle bus to and from Darmstadt.
Back in 1986, an early short film by Javier Fesser, who later became famous with audience successes like "Clever & Smart" and six Goya Awards for "Camino," was screened at the festival. This year he is represented again with a short film – "Predator," his latest work in short format.
Diverse film program for young and old
The evening program starts with live music on four days, before short films of various genres flicker across the screen from nightfall – from animation to documentary to comedy, crime or experimental film.
The film program starts at 1 p.m. in the nearby film tent, which also offers a special children's program on Saturdays. Friday features a youth program as well as the return of the popular short film poetry slam, where texts written specifically for short films are performed live.
Super 8 turns 60 – special program at the municipal cinema
A highlight of 2025: The Super 8 format celebrates its 60th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the Weiterstadt Municipal Cinema will present a historical program by Offenbach filmmaker Enrico Corsano, featuring rare film footage, workshops on Super 8 shooting, and an exhibition on the festival grounds. In addition, eight current Super 8 short films will compete for the audience's favor.
Festival closing ceremony and shuttle service
On Monday, August 18th, the "Best of" program in the film tent, which requires a ticket, will conclude the festival (starting at 8 pm). Admission remains free on the other days – donations are welcome.
A free shuttle bus will bring guests from Darmstadt to the festival in the evening and back again after the last film. Further information about the program, travel, and all offers will be available from the beginning of August at www.filmfest-weiterstadt.de .
