Free practical workshop on coping with heat on September 19th in Groß-Gerau
On Thursday, September 19, 2025, from 4 pm to 8 pm, a free workshop on climate-adapted garden design will take place at Dornberg Castle in Groß-Gerau. The event is part of the nationwide Climate Adaptation Week and is aimed at anyone interested in practical solutions for dealing with the consequences of climate change. The meeting point is the castle cafeteria, followed by a walk through the grounds.
The workshop will be led by climate expert Christian Kotremba from Darmstadt. It will begin with a keynote presentation followed by a tour of the grounds. Using examples – such as the new building of the Groß-Gerau Adult Education Center (KVHS), the large inner courtyard, and the historic wall surfaces – Kotremba will demonstrate how greening, shading, and structural measures can provide heat protection. The effects will be made visible on-site using thermal measurements. No registration is required for this first part.
Practical part with registration
In the second part, participants take an active role: Together, they create a perennial bed, a green wall, or a small biotope. The goal is to create a balanced microclimate around buildings, saving energy, improving quality of life, and strengthening the neighborhood. Participants' own ideas are welcome.
In the long term, an exemplary climate-adapted area is to be created around Dornberg Castle – as a learning and showcase site for biodiversity, heat protection and heavy rain prevention.
The workshop is part of the educational series “Future-proof energy for all. Knowledge – Will – Finding ways” and is funded by the Hessian State Energy Agency (LEA) with funds from the Hessian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy, Transport, Housing and Rural Areas.
