City calls on young people to run for office – application deadline is July 7, 2025
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, is calling on young people aged 12 to 17 to actively participate in city politics. This is made possible by the new Youth Parliament , which was established as part of the "damit!" participation project. The first election will take place on September 26, 2025. Interested individuals can apply until July 7, 2025, at 6 p.m. – either as a candidate or via a lottery system.
“The youth plenary is an important instrument for making democracy tangible for young people, strengthening their self-efficacy, and counteracting anti-democratic tendencies,” explains Mayor Barbara Akdeniz Paul Georg Wandrey also supports the project: “Democracy will only be accepted if there is a feeling that everyone can participate – especially young people.”
Enabling participation – promoting democracy
The Youth Assembly will consist of up to 25 elected young people and 20 randomly selected representatives from the city's districts. Two members of the City Student Council part of the body. The members will meet at least four times a year and collaborate with city decision-makers in thematic project groups.
The term of office averages 30 months , but can be terminated voluntarily at any time. Organizational support is provided by the new Coordination Office for Children and Youth Participation , a joint project of the Darmstadt Youth Council and the Darmstadt Youth Education Center .
