No KABS control measures in 2025 – Bti tablets available free of charge at the town hall
The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) has been detected in the town of Groß-Gerau, particularly in the town center. This invasive mosquito species is considered particularly aggressive and can transmit viruses such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and West Nile under certain conditions. Dogs can also be affected – for example, by filarial worms that cause heartworm disease.
The city administration of Groß-Gerau is therefore calling for active cooperation to prevent the spread of mosquitoes. This season, the Municipal Action Group for Mosquito Control (KABS e. V.) will not conducting any direct mosquito control measures on private property.
Free Bti tablets available at the town hall
This makes responsible action by citizens all the more important. The city is providing Bti tablets free of charge – a biological agent that is harmless to humans and animals. The tablets can be picked up at the information desk in the town hall (Am Marktplatz 1). Further information is available on the city's website and from KABS e. V.
Effective measures to contain
The following measures should be observed between April and October:
- Avoid standing water in rain barrels, watering cans, saucers, birdbaths, gutters or hollow fence posts.
- Empty water containers completely at least once a week
- Cover open containers, e.g. with a fine-mesh net.
- Treat unavoidable water sources with Bti every 14 days.
Why caution is advised
The Asian tiger mosquito originates from Southeast Asia and has spread worldwide. Mild winters, such as those increasingly occurring in southern Hesse, favor its establishment. Although no pathogens have currently been detected in the region, the risk of transmission by infected travelers returning from abroad exists at any time.
The city of Groß-Gerau is appealing to all citizens to actively participate. Together, we can prevent the mosquito from establishing a permanent population.
