Police conduct speed checks at Erich Kästner School – Seven drivers caught speeding – Top speeder clocked at 51 km/h
During a speed check near the Erich Kästner School in Darmstadt-Kranichstein on Tuesday morning, August 25, schoolchildren handed out green and yellow cards to drivers for their speeding. The initiative, under the motto "Speeding for Kids," was carried out by officers from the 1st Police Precinct together with the local community police officer and the Darmstadt municipal police.
Between 7:30 and 9:20 a.m., students from the Erich Kästner School assisted emergency services with the prevention campaign. According to police, the vast majority of road users adhered to the posted speed limit of 30 km/h.
Approximately 70 green cards were distributed
Around 70 drivers received a green card from the students on their behalf , as a token of appreciation for adhering to the speed limit.
Seven drivers were speeding and received yellow cards. One driver in particular exceeded the speed limit significantly: he was clocked at 51 km/h instead of the permitted 30 km/h . He was issued a traffic violation notice and will also have to pay a fine.
According to the police, the direct feedback from the schoolchildren was well received by the road users who were checked.
Children should be made aware of the dangers in traffic
The "Speed Cameras for Kids" campaign takes place regularly after school holidays in the vicinity of schools and daycare centers. Its aim is to raise awareness among drivers about the particular dangers children face in traffic. Younger road users, in particular, are not yet able to assess traffic situations and speeds as accurately as adults.
At the same time, the participating children are also intended to benefit from the initiative. Through their active participation, they will become aware of potential dangers in road traffic and learn to move around increasingly independently and safely.
