City responds to drought and increased fire risk
Due to the ongoing drought, the municipality of Groß-Gerau has issued a ban on candles in several cemeteries.
The cemeteries affected are those on Klein-Gerauer Straße, Waldstraße, as well as in Berkach, Dornheim and Wallerstädten.
Fire at cemetery this week
The decision stems from a fire at the cemetery on Klein-Gerauer Straße this week. Fortunately, according to the city, no major damage occurred.
It is still unclear whether an attempt was made to remove weeds with fire or whether overturned candles ignited dry grass.
City warns of high risk of forest fires
The cemetery administration is reacting to the current weather conditions. Experts are currently warning of a medium to high risk of forest fires in southern Hesse.
Signs in the cemeteries now point out the ban on candles. The use of fire to control weeds is also expressly prohibited.
Furthermore, the city requests that glass containers and other glass grave furnishings be avoided as much as possible.
