Tips on cooling, protection against heavy rain and climate-friendly urban design
Darmstadt. Discover the city's climate with thermal cameras and air thermometers: The Office for Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation invites you to a guided climate tour on Wednesday, August 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. The meeting point is Karolinenplatz at the entrance to the Herrngarten. The route leads through the palace gardens, past the perennial beds of the Erich-Ollenhauer-Promenade, along Alexanderstraße to the campus of the Technical University of Darmstadt, and back to the Herrngarten.
Participants will measure air and surface temperatures themselves on sealed and greened areas. Practical tips will be provided on how to cool residential areas and how to better protect buildings from flooding during heavy rain.
In addition to the measurements, key topics of climate adaptation will be discussed. The city's climate adaptation plan, including measures in the areas of urban green spaces, urban water features, and urban beige (climate-adapted planning and construction), will be presented. Specialized maps, some of which were created in cooperation with the German Meteorological Service, will also provide insights: they show urban heat islands, results from drone flights on surface temperatures, and heavy rainfall hazard maps with potential flooding areas.
