Tips on cooling, heavy rain protection and climate-friendly urban design
Darmstadt. Discover the city's climate with thermal cameras and air thermometers: The Office for Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation invites you to a guided climate tour on Wednesday, August 20, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The meeting point is Karolinenplatz at the entrance to the Herrngarten. The route leads through the palace gardens, past the perennial beds of the Erich Ollenhauer Promenade, across Alexanderstraße to the campus of the Technical University of Darmstadt, and back to the Herrngarten.
Participants will measure air and surface temperatures on sealed and green surfaces themselves. They will receive practical advice on how to cool the living environment and how buildings can be better protected from flooding during heavy rain.
In addition to the measurements, key topics of climate adaptation will be discussed. The city's climate adaptation plan, with measures in the areas of urban green, urban blue (water), and urban beige (climate-adapted planning and construction), will be presented. Special maps, developed in cooperation with the German Meteorological Service, among others, also provide insights: They show heat islands in the city, results from drone surveys on surface temperatures, and heavy rain hazard maps with potential flood areas.
