A public event on November 6th at the district office will provide information about the consequences of climate change and possible protective measures
How can the Groß-Gerau district prepare for the consequences of climate change? What measures can help against increasing heat, drought, and heavy rainfall? These questions will be addressed at a public event hosted by the Groß-Gerau district on Friday, November 6, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the district administration office.
The Climate Protection Department will present the district's climate adaptation concept, which was adopted in June. The event will take place in the Peter Schöffer Room at the District Office, Wilhelm-Seipp-Straße 4 in Groß-Gerau. Participation is free of charge.
Climate change poses challenges for municipalities
Heat waves, prolonged dry spells, drought, and heavy rainfall are already impacting nature, the environment, and the daily lives of people in the Groß-Gerau district. The climate adaptation concept examines these developments and identifies ways in which the district and its municipalities can prepare for changing climatic conditions.
The focus is on the collaboration of different specialist areas and concrete action options on site. These include, among others, environmental and nature conservation, water management, disaster relief, and measures for protection against heat.
The experiences of people in the district should also be included in the discussion.
“Climate change is not an abstract development, but is already changing our environment and our everyday lives here in southern Hesse,” explains Clara Hemming, climate adaptation manager for the Groß-Gerau district. With this concept, the district aims to demonstrate the challenges that exist and how they can be addressed collectively.
Dialogue between experts and young people
A special part of the event is a moderated dialogue with representatives from nature conservation and forestry, as well as students from the district.
They report on changes in nature and in daily life. The aim is to bring together different experiences and perspectives from different generations.
Visitors are also invited to ask questions, describe their own observations, and participate in the discussion.
Event as part of “Word Exchange”
The presentation of the climate adaptation concept is part of the "Word Exchange" event series. The evening's content is based on **Sustainable Development Goal 15 of the United Nations ("Life on Land")**. This goal addresses, among other things, the protection and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems.
The district's climate adaptation project is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment as part of the German Adaptation Strategy to Climate Change, based on a resolution of the German Bundestag.
