Darmstadt is preparing a climate assessment to identify heat hotspots and take precautions against heavy rainfall
To improve the urban climate, the Pallaswiesen and Morneweg district (PaMo) will be surveyed by helicopter during the summer months of July or August 2025. The aim is to create high-resolution thermal images identify so-called heat hotspots climate assessment . This measure is part of the urban development funding program " Social Cohesion ".
The aerial survey will take place from an altitude of approximately 300 meters on a particularly hot, sunny, and windless day. Surface temperatures on roofs, courtyards, open spaces , and in public areas will be recorded. This thermal data will provide a basis for targeted measures to mitigate heat and heavy rainfall risks , as well as to improve green spaces within the neighborhood.
Measures against overheating and for climate adaptation
infrastructure and environment firm commissioned to prepare the expert report will subsequently develop concrete proposals for de-sealing, greening, and structural modifications . The aim is to adapt the heavily sealed and heat-stressed neighborhood to the consequences of climate change.
“The climate assessment for the PaMo district is intended to identify ways in which the neighborhood can be further developed and thus enhanced in terms of climate adaptation,” explains Michael Kolmer, . The focus is on heat and heavy rainfall preparedness, as well as expanding urban green spaces for residents. The project also aims to raise awareness among local businesses so they can implement measures in the building and property sectors.
Financing and data protection
The report is financed by funds from the federal and state program "Social Cohesion" as well as by the City of Darmstadt's own funds. Information about the project and data protection guidelines for the thermal updraft survey can be found online at
