Remembrance of the deportations of Jews and Sinti in 1942/43
On Sunday, September 28, 2025, at 11 a.m., at the Darmstadt freight depot memorial site the annual commemoration of the deportations of Jews and Sinti from the former People's State of Hesse in 1942/43 will take place
The event is organized by the "Gedenkort Güterbahnhof" initiative, the City of Darmstadt, the Jewish Community of Darmstadt, the State Association of Sinti and Roma in Hesse , and the alliances against right-wing extremism in southern Hesse. Citizens and media representatives are invited.
Historical background
Darmstadt played a central role in the deportations. March 20, 1942. The first deportation of Jewish citizens took place
Further large deportations took place on September 27 and 30, 1942.On March 15, 1943, were also 69 Sinti from Darmstadt and the surrounding area deported by the Darmstadt criminal police.
Design of this year's commemoration
This year's program will be presented by students from the Bertolt Brecht School (supported by Kirsti Ohr) and the Justus Liebig School (supported by Julie Mathieu). The program will include readings of selected biographies and letters from victims. Musical accompaniment will be provided by Martin Grebenstein.
