Brigitte Morgenroth tells the story of a teacher who takes in a girl who grew up among dogs. The reading is accompanied by music.
The novel is set in an Allgäu village in the 1950s. The war is a taboo subject, the Catholic Church dictates the rules, and the seasons determine the rhythm of work. When the village schoolteacher, Greta, takes in Lili, a girl raised by dogs, the village's order begins to crumble. Greta fights for the traumatized child—and gains a daughter.
"Behind Courtyards" tells the story of a so-called feral child from a female perspective. It was based on a real-life Ukrainian girl who grew up with dogs. The novel was published on October 2, 2026, and presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Morgenroth participated in the Darmstadt Writing Workshop.
