Lilies expand their recreational sports offerings to include American football
SV Darmstadt 98 is expanding its sports offerings: The Darmstadt Diamonds will now offer American football under the umbrella of the Lilies. The long-established football club is being integrated into SV 98, thus gaining a new perspective after several challenging years both on and off the field. More than 100 active members from the football section will now be part of SV Darmstadt 98.
With the integration of the Diamonds, SV 98 is further expanding its offerings in recreational and youth sports. At the same time, the more than 40-year history of the Darmstadt football club is to be continued.
The history and identity of the Diamonds should be preserved
For Roy Reinelt-Peter, board member of SV Darmstadt 98 for the amateur departments as well as the fan and support department, the focus is on joint further development.
“It was important to us that this wasn’t simply a case of taking over or replacing something. We want to build something together. The history and identity of the Diamonds should be preserved, and the football players should benefit from the structures and opportunities of a multi-sports club,” explains Reinelt-Peter.
SV 98 sees great potential for development, particularly in its youth sector. At the same time, the club gains more than 100 new members for its recreational sports program through the integration.
"American football fascinates many people and has great potential, especially among young people," emphasizes Reinelt-Peter. The addition of the Diamonds fits with the ambition to further develop SV 98 not only as a professional football club but also as a major multi-sports club in the city.
Darmstadt Diamonds look back on a successful history
The Darmstadt Diamonds were founded in 1985 and have therefore been part of the Darmstadt sports scene for more than four decades.
In the 1990s and 2000s, the men's team played in the highest German league for a time. The youth development program was particularly successful for many years. The Diamonds won the German Youth Championship in both 1995 and 2001.
After several years that were difficult in terms of sports and organization, the integration into SV Darmstadt 98 should now ensure long-term stability.
Youth development should be strengthened
With the new American Football department, SV Darmstadt 98 not only wants to further develop the existing teams in terms of sports, but especially to promote youth development.
The organizational and sporting integration will be prepared in the coming weeks in cooperation with the management of the Darmstadt Diamonds. Details regarding the future structure and training opportunities will be clarified during this process.
