Barrier-free redesign of public space at Saladin-Eck starts summer 2026
Darmstadt – The City Council of Darmstadt, the city of science, approved the redesign of the public traffic area at the so-called Saladin Corner (Landgraf-Georg-Straße 3) at its meeting on Wednesday (24). This is in line with the construction of the new International House at TU Darmstadt, which will serve as an international service and meeting center.
The public sidewalk at this location connects the market square, Holzstraße, and the Goldene Krone and is an important barrier-free pedestrian connection. The planned reorganization of the area, including the relocation of overhead line masts and control cabinets for tram operations, will create a new entrance to the city center and a spacious forecourt for the new building.
Accessible paths and new recreational areas
In the future, pedestrian access will run parallel to the building and away from the railway track, significantly improving accessibility. A tree bed will be created in front of the main entrance of the International House, flanked by bicycle parking facilities. The necessary electrical cabinets will be covered and integrated into benches.
The square will be paved with concrete blocks, similar to those used at Ernst-Ludwigs-Platz. The material meets accessibility requirements in terms of color and texture.
Construction schedule
A rail replacement service will be in operation for approximately eight weeks during the construction work. The project is being implemented by TU Darmstadt, and construction will begin immediately after the next Heinerfest (Christmas Festival) during the 2026 summer holidays.
