A concert series in Darmstadt senior citizens' homes combines music and life stories
With familiar children's songs, folk songs, and popular tunes, pianist Enhyeong Lee takes elderly people in Darmstadt on a musical journey through their lives. Under the title "A Musical Journey Through Life," she presents a concert series in four senior living facilities in Darmstadt and Eberstadt. She combines familiar melodies with her own piano arrangements and personal commentary, designed to evoke memories of different phases of life.
The series kicked off on September 19, 2026, with a concert at the German Red Cross (DRK) senior citizens' center in Starkenburg. Around 30 residents enjoyed a program ranging from childhood songs and well-known hits to quiet evening melodies.
Familiar songs invite you to sing along
The opening concert already demonstrated how closely music and personal memories can be intertwined. Many audience members spontaneously sang along to familiar melodies. During the hit song "Tulips from Amsterdam," almost the entire hall joined in. Several guests were visibly moved by the musical performance.
Even after the concert, several residents sought out the pianist for conversation and reported how much they had enjoyed the music and the accompanying stories.
From children's songs to well-known hits
The idea for the project arose from the pianist's encounters with older people in Germany. She particularly remembers a conversation with a woman who spoke of her childhood in a small German town and the songs that had accompanied her back then.
From this, Enhyeong Lee developed a program that understands music not only as entertainment, but as a connection to personal memories.
The musical journey begins with children's songs like "Do You Know How Many Little Stars There Are?" and "Little Hans." These are followed by well-known hits such as "All of Paris Dreams of Love," "Tulips from Amsterdam," and "Where My Sun Shines." More tranquil melodies like "The Moon Has Risen" and "La-Le-Lu" form further stops along the way.
Between the musical pieces, Lee guides the audience through different phases of her life with short, personal anecdotes. She aims to give listeners space for their own memories without imposing specific feelings or experiences.
pianist with international training
Enhyeong Lee grew up in South Korea and began her musical training there. She then continued her piano studies in Germany and graduated with distinction from the Karlsruhe University of Music with a master's degree.
Today she works as a piano teacher at the Bad Soden music school. In her concert project, she focuses on songs that have been familiar to many older people in Germany since their childhood.
The specially designed piano arrangements are intended to preserve the recognizability of the melodies while simultaneously fulfilling the musical requirements of a piano concerto.
