The next deadline for exchanging driver's licenses expires in January 2025. This is due to EU Directive 2006/126/EC, which mandates standardized and forgery-proof driver's licenses. In Germany, a phased plan regulates who must exchange their license and when, in order to avoid overburdening the authorities. The regulation affects approximately 43 million driver's licenses in total.
