Improved paths for cyclists, pedestrians and cars – €8.9 million investment volume
The city of Darmstadt has begun the expansion of Jägertorstraße between Bartningstraße and Kranichsteiner Straße. Construction started on April 1, 2025, and is expected to last approximately two years. This was announced by Head of Mobility Paul Georg Wandrey at a press conference.
Jägertorstraße , designated as district road K 178 , is an important connecting route between the districts of Kranichstein and Arheilgen The aim of the project is a comprehensive modernization of the road – including new pedestrian and cycle paths, improved traffic safety, and more efficient access to adjacent residential areas.
“The new plan takes into account the needs of all road users – pedestrians, cyclists and motorists,” said Wandrey. “Even though the construction period is challenging, the city and its residents will benefit in the long term from increased safety and mobility.”
Overview of measures
- Road resurfacing and construction of new sidewalks
- Continuous cycle route , protected cycle lanes in the area of Lake Brentano
- New culvert structure to replace the previous bridges
- Renewal of the sewer and utility lines
- Total costs: 8.9 million euros gross
- Originally estimated: 5.3 million euros
- Cost increase due to rising construction prices
The roadway will have a width of between 5.50 and 7.50 meters , cycle paths are usually 1.85 meters wide , and pedestrian and cycle paths in the combined area are up to 3 meters wide .
Construction schedule and detours
The first construction phase, from the Bartningstraße intersection to Waltherstraße, will last approximately 11 to 13 weeks . This will be followed by the expansion of the Ruthsen/Mühlbach , which will take six months completely closed , but pedestrian and bicycle paths will mostly remain accessible .
- Detours for car traffic : Large-scale detour via Bartningstraße
- Tram service : will continue uninterrupted.
- Public transport bus lines : only partially affected
