Chef Ginkel convinces in the final with a classic herbal composition
Surprise victory for Darmstadt at the 18th Frankfurt Green Soss Festival: The council cellar of the science city of Darmstadt won first place at the traditional festival at the Roßmarkt on Saturday, May 24, 2025. Kitchen chief Dieter Ginkel convinced with his classic interpretation of the Siebenkräft Court and prevailed against strong competition in the final.
A total of 49 restaurants had taken part in the competition. After seven preliminary rounds, the day winners qualified for the grand finale, in which around 650 guests - at the same time jury - tasted the sauces anonymously. The green creations were served in style in the glass, accompanied by potatoes and egg. The guests awarded their voice by a ballot - the result was clear: the Darmstadt variant convinced across the board.
"That was a real sensation," said Ratskeller operations manager Hans-Peter Schlörit. He had registered the Ratskeller for the festival for the first time. "A great success for our team - and a win for the entire Gastronomy."
Second year, the “Zum Einhorn” in Frankfurt-Bonames went to the previous year's winner restaurant, and the “Eselei” restaurant in the Northwest Center Frankfurt took third place.
It is currently open whether the festival will continue in the coming year. The organizers Maja Wolff and Torsten Müller are faced with financial hurdles - new sponsors would be necessary to secure a new edition.
However, there is a consolation for connoisseurs: the winning sauce can still be found on the menu of the Darmstadt Council cellar. So if you want to enjoy Frankfurt's most popular national court in the future, you will conveniently find your way to Darmstadt by S-Bahn line 6-also from the Rhine-Main area.
