BUND and the adult education center explore old and new settlements between the Lincoln and Paulus districts
How has Bessungen developed, and what urban planning and ecological concepts shape old and new neighborhoods? These questions will be explored in a roughly four-hour hike to which the BUND (Friends of the Earth Germany) and the Darmstadt Adult Education Center invite you on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
Under the title “Old and new settlements in Bessungen – a hike from the Lincoln district to the Paulus district”, Professor Dr. Jörg Dettmar leads the participants through different areas of the Darmstadt district.
From the Lincoln district via Ludwigshöhe to Alt-Bessungen
The urban ecology excursion begins in the Lincoln district and leads from there through the newly developing Ludwigshöhe district to Alt-Bessungen and finally to the Paulus district. This allows for a direct comparison of different phases and concepts of Darmstadt's urban development.
During the hike, Dettmar provides insights into the history of the settlements as well as their urban planning and open space design concepts. A particular focus is placed on urban ecology. This includes topics such as urban climate and biodiversity, and the significance of green spaces and open areas for the various neighborhoods.
Participation is free of charge
The hike begins on Sunday, August 30th, at 1:45 pm at the Lincolnsiedlung tram stop on Heidelberger Straße, near house number 219.The excursion is expected to last approximately four hours.
Participation is free of charge. Weather-appropriate clothing and sufficient provisions for the journey are recommended.
