Security measures are being implemented on Wilhelm-Glässing-Straße
The synagogue on Wilhelm-Glässing-Straße in Darmstadt will be fitted with a protective barrier. The city council of Darmstadt approved the installation of the additional security device on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. The measure is intended to protect the Jewish community and visitors to the synagogue.
The basis is a security concept developed by the Hessian State Criminal Police Office for Jewish institutions in Hesse. Details regarding the specific implementation will not be published for security reasons.
Pipes in the sidewalk area need to be adjusted
For the foundations of the impact protection barrier, existing utility lines in the sidewalk area will need to be adjusted in terms of position and height. The curbs and the roadway of Wilhelm-Glässing-Straße will not be affected by the work.
The existing trees will be fully preserved. Despite some narrow sections, the city states that the area will remain accessible for people with disabilities. Fire and rescue routes will also not be affected by the barriers.
The implementation of this measure will incur no costs for the science city of Darmstadt.
City reaffirms solidarity with Jewish community
Mayor Hanno Benz and transport commissioner Paul Georg Wandrey link the security measure with a clear commitment against anti-Semitism.
“Jewish life is part of Darmstadt and we oppose all forms of antisemitism. In light of the ongoing threat, we support the implementation of protective measures for the synagogue in our city and reaffirm our solidarity with the Jewish community of Darmstadt, which is and will remain an integral part of our cosmopolitan city,” Benz and Wandrey emphasized.
