77 percent of investments go to cities and municipalities – the mayor sees himself on the side of Economics Minister Mansoori
Darmstadt. Mayor Hanno Benz on Monday (August 4) strongly endorsed the demand by Hesse's Minister of Economic Affairs, Kaweh Mansoori , 77 percent of federal investment funds in Hesse to the municipalities . Mansoori had previously expressed this position in a summer interview with Hessian Broadcasting .
“We are feeling the enormous backlog of investment in cities and municipalities: in roads, on the railways, in schools, in daycare centers and sports facilities – there is a great need to catch up in all areas of future investment,” said Benz. The minister’s now publicly stated position therefore reflects the reality for many municipalities.
Benz: "Budget only passed with great effort"
The mayor of Darmstadt describes the situation as challenging. "Only with an enormous effort was it possible to pass a budget from the democratic center of the city council, the approval of which we are now awaiting from the regional council." The city depends on this approval in order to subsidies to clubs, associations, and initiatives .
Another special meeting of the city council is scheduled for next week. Discussions will also take place there regarding adjustments to the medium-term investment plan – a prerequisite for the expected budget approval.
Mayor Benz: Cities and municipalities bear the main burden
“I expressly welcome the demand of the Hessian Minister of Economic Affairs,” Benz emphasized. Kaweh Mansoori has found “an ally in him to bring this realization to Berlin.” Cities and municipalities must the largest share of federal funds , because they are “the ones who bear the brunt of the investments.”
