Free service launched for citizens with limited mobility
library courier service on Friday the 22nd – a free delivery service for residents with limited mobility within the city limits. The service is a joint initiative of the Darmstadt City Library, the Darmstadt Citizens' Foundation, and the Darmstadt Volunteer Association.
"Whether permanently or temporarily: For those who cannot leave their homes, or can only do so with great difficulty, books, audiobooks, films and more will simply be delivered to their doorstep. The library courier service is a good example of how social participation can be made practical and direct for people in their local communities," explained City Councillor Holger Klötzner at the presentation.
The Darmstadt Citizens' Foundation also emphasized the importance of the project: "The library courier not only brings media to people – it brings participation, education and joy of life to places where mobility is limited," said Dr. Markus Hoschek, Chairman of the Board of the Foundation.
Here's how the offer works:
- Users contact the city library by telephone and specify their media requests (novels, non-fiction books, magazines, films, audiobooks).
- The library team compiles the requested media and coordinates the appointments.
- Volunteers deliver the media to people's homes and pick it up again.
- A valid library card is required.
In addition to the media selection, personal contact is the main focus: The volunteer helpers ensure a reliable handover and create a sense of everyday life and community.
