Anniversaries of Austen, Rilke, Boccaccio and Mann will shape the upcoming season
Darmstadt. The Darmstadt Literature House will dedicate its entire upcoming autumn 2025 season to the classics of world literature. The focus will be on timeless works and significant anniversaries: the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's birth, the 150th anniversary of Rainer Maria Rilke's birth, the 650th anniversary of Giovanni Boccaccio's death, and the 150th anniversary of Thomas Mann's birth.
The program opens on October 7th with Michael Maar's new book about the secrets of literary masterpieces. On October 14th, an evening will be held in honor of Mascha Kaléko, whose 50th death anniversary is being commemorated, presented by Volker Weidermann ("If I Were a Cloud").
A special highlight is on October 21st : Meike Rötzer and Andreas Skouras will bring Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina to the stage in just 90 minutes with voice and piano.
On October 24th , National Library Day , the Literature House will open its doors to visitors. Organizations housed within the building will present themselves and invite visitors to engage in conversation.
