A common buzzard was likely defending its nest – experts advise caution
An unusual incident occurred last week on the agricultural road between Eschollbrücken and Crumstadt . A walker reported being repeatedly attacked by a bird of prey. According to his account, the bird repeatedly flew towards him, emitting loud warning calls, and approached to within a few meters.
Experts believe it was likely a common buzzard . During the breeding season, these birds sometimes defend their nest and young very vigorously against perceived intruders.
Attacks serve to protect the boys
Common buzzards exhibit this behavior primarily when humans approach their nest. While the attacks may appear threatening, they are considered typical defensive behavior for the species and are generally not dangerous.
Anyone who finds themselves in such an area should remain calm and leave as quickly as possible. Turning back or avoiding the area for a few days may also be advisable.
Protect your head and keep your distance
If a buzzard repeatedly attacks, experts recommend protecting your head with a backpack, a closed umbrella, or a walking stick. The birds usually orient themselves by the highest point of a person and attack accordingly.
Since the breeding season of the common buzzard ends towards the end of July, the situation should ease on its own in the coming days.
Those who maintain a safe distance from birds of prey and respect their breeding grounds help to avoid conflicts between humans and animals.
