A herd of six continues to support natural regeneration in the Griesheim city forest
The six donkeys employed by the city of Griesheim for landscape maintenance have changed locations. After working at Haus Waldeck and on the area by the sports field, the animals will now graze in the coming weeks on an area near the forest playground. Afterwards, they will move on to the Nordring.
Since 2022, donkeys have been supporting the ecological management of the Griesheim municipal forest. Their grazing helps to suppress the rapidly growing reed grass . This gives native herbs, shrubs, and young trees a better chance to thrive.
Contribution to natural regeneration
Over the course of the year, the animals will be deployed to other areas in the city forest. The aim is to promote the natural regeneration of the forest and strengthen biodiversity.
The donkeys can be easily observed from the paths and visitors are welcome. However, the landscape conservation farm expressly points out that feeding the animals is not permitted.
The city of Griesheim provides further information on forest grazing and the use of donkeys on its website.
