Autobahn GmbH warns of traffic jams on many routes between the beginning of August and mid-September
Berlin/South Hesse. The summer holidays are coming to an end – and with them, the risk of traffic jams on German highways . According to the Federal Autobahn GmbH increased travel traffic in the coming weeks, particularly on weekends in August and early September . Both returning travelers and vacationers on their way to their holidays should expect disruptions.
Return and arrival traffic overlap
According to the Autobahn GmbH, the overlap between return traffic and ongoing arrivals is particularly challenging – many holiday accommodations are rented out on a weekly basis, which further concentrates the peak travel times.
Forecast by week: Where things could get tight
August 4–10: First wave of returnees from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia.
Risk of traffic jams, especially on Saturday, August 9 (significantly increased) and Sunday, August 10 (noticeably increased).
Affected routes include: A2, A3, A4, A7, A8, A9, A10, A93, A99.
August 11–17: Return journeys from Bremen, Lower Saxony, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland.
Heavy traffic congestion on Saturday, August 16, less severe on Sunday.
Affected routes include: A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A61, A93, and A99.
August 18–24: Return journeys from North Rhine-Westphalia
. Heavy traffic already on August 23 and 24.
Affected routes include: A1, A2, A3, A5, A7, A8, A9, A44, A59, A61, A93, A99
August 25–31: Moderate relief expected.
Noticeably increased traffic only on Saturday, August 30.
September 1–7: End of school holidays in Northern Germany (e.g., Hamburg, Berlin, Brandenburg).
Traffic jams forecast for Saturday, September 6 (high) and Sunday, September 7 (moderate).
Affected routes include: A1, A2, A3, A7, A8, A9, A10, A24, A93, A99
September 8–14: Return wave from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
Peak days are Saturday, September 13, and Sunday, September 14.
Affected routes include: A3, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A93, A99.
