A concert in Eberstadt combines organ music with colorful illumination
Music and light will merge into a unique concert experience on Sunday, October 25th, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Darmstadt-Eberstadt. Under the title "Organ and Light," organist Stefan Mann will perform works from several centuries, each with a thematic connection to light, starting at 5 p.m. The music will be accompanied by colored illumination between the organ pipes.
LED lights bathe the organ in different colors to match the individual compositions. To allow visitors to directly experience the interplay of music and light, chairs with a direct view of the organ are placed in front of the altar area.
From Bach and Vivaldi to Widor
The concert opens with Johann Sebastian Bach's "Pièce d'Orgue." This is followed by the variations "O Jesu Christe, wahres Licht" by the Dutch composer Theo Meurs. Also featured is Antonio Vivaldi's Violin Concerto in A minor, arranged for organ by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Georg Böhm's choral variations "Christe, der du bist Tag und Licht" (Christ, who art day and light) represent a work of the North German Baroque period. Another highlight is "Fiat Lux" by the French composer Théodore Dubois. This late Romantic work musically interprets the biblical act of creation, the emergence of light.
Improvisation arises during the concert
Stefan Mann himself will also contribute a special program item. The organist will improvise based on the impressions of the evening, musically depicting different moods of light through clusters of sounds, timbres, and melodies.
The program concludes with the first movement from Charles-Marie Widor's 5th Organ Symphony, featuring a powerful finale in organ tutti.
Stefan Mann studied church music in Frankfurt and has been working as a church musician in Eberstadt since 2000. In addition to classical organ music, gospel and popular music are among his specialties. He is also the founder and director of the Eberstadt Gospel Choir, the church band, and the Eberstadt Youth Choir.
Admission to the concert is free, but donations are welcome. The event is sponsored by the Dotter Foundation and the Catholic Life Eberstadt Association.
