The campaign aims to convey the importance of a healthy breakfast
Nearly 1,700 first-graders in Darmstadt received reusable lunchboxes filled with organic and regional food as part of the nationwide organic lunchbox campaign. City Treasurer André Schellenberg and School Superintendent Holger Klötzner presented the lunchboxes to children from the Christian Morgenstern School on Wednesday.
With this initiative, the science city of Darmstadt aims to raise awareness of the importance of a balanced breakfast for children and their school day. Schellenberg and Klötzner have jointly assumed patronage of the project.
“With the organic lunchbox, we want to bring a little joy to all children shortly after they start school and highlight the importance of a healthy breakfast,” explained Schellenberg. He added that he knew from conversations with teachers that not all children get a good breakfast every day.
Breakfast should boost energy and concentration
School superintendent Klötzner also emphasized the importance of the first meal of the day. A healthy breakfast supports children's development and forms an important foundation for daily learning. This year's organic lunchbox contained, among other things, an apple, a carrot, a raisin roll, and tea.
Volunteer helpers had previously packed the approximately 1,700 cans in the administrative building of the municipal services department (EAD). The organic food used largely came from the Darmstadt area.
In addition, the boxes contained age-appropriate information on nutrition, a coloring leaflet, and a yo-yo. Packing and distribution were organized by EAD employees from the catering and domestic services departments, together with the KAGEL secondhand store and the school board. Some schools were again supplied by cargo bike.
This campaign has been running in Darmstadt since 2022
In Darmstadt, the organic bread box campaign was first implemented in 2022 by Sabine Kleindiek, 1st Operations Manager of the EAD, and Anja Klugt, Head of the municipal school office.
This year's campaign is supported by numerous companies and institutions from Darmstadt and the region, who are providing food, services or other contributions.
