City plans new commercial area after company decision
Reinheim. Following the withdrawal of Merz from its originally planned location in Reinheim, the city is looking ahead: The pharmaceutical company has donated the land intended for the new building to the city – thus laying an important foundation for a new commercial area .
"We are grateful to the management at Merz for this generous gift. This gives us a future perspective, which we are now working on resolutely," explains Mayor Manuel Feick . "We will overcome this challenge and emerge stronger."
During the initial application phase, the city administration had already developed alternative concepts in case the site decision at the time turned out to be negative. Following Merz's donation, Reinheim was able to immediately draw on this preliminary work and redesigning its commercial area planning .
In parallel with the land donation, negotiations are currently underway to acquire additional land where further commercial developments could be developed in the future. The city council has also commissioned a specialized agency to prepare the marketing and development of the donated site.
Mayor Feick sees commercial land development as a key future project:
"Commercial land development is a top priority. We want to position Reinheim for economic sustainability and create attractive conditions for businesses. This strengthens not only our city, but also the entire region."
The necessary analyses and investigations to be completed by the end of the year. The city plans to present initial details on the plans and potential locations in spring 2026.
Despite the change of course, contact with Merz has continued. The donation of the property offers Reinheim the opportunity to use the area for its own development goals . "We're not burying our heads in the sand—on the contrary: We see this situation as a great opportunity to broaden Reinheim's economic position and provide new impetus," Feick concluded. He also announced that the last two vacant plots in the Nordwest II will be sold to businesses in October.
