City, police and drug assistance consult after decision on “Scentral”
Immediately following the City Council's resolution on the motion "Scentral/Herrngarten – Strengthening Security and Assistance Together," the Security and Prevention Working Group (AG) met on Friday. The goal is to sustainably improve the situation surrounding the "Scentral" drug assistance facility in Herrngarten.
Common orientation framework adopted
Mayor Hanno Benz and Mayor Barbara Akdeniz explained the resolution, which they said provides a "good, broad framework for guidance." This makes it possible to address the issues of safety and support together. "We must keep in mind both those affected by addiction and the residents who suffer from this situation – both groups have rights that must be protected," Benz emphasized.
External perspective brings new impulses
Alexander Klein, head of the drug support department at the Frankfurt-based association Arbeits- und Erziehungshilfe eV, was invited as a guest. He shared his insights from his work in Frankfurt. Benz emphasized that the external perspective provided valuable input and enabled an objective assessment of the situation.
Focus on structural and integrative measures
Benz emphasized that consumption rooms must be designed from the outset to accommodate both intravenous and inhalation consumption. This poses special structural requirements.
The working group is also examining further integrative measures. One example is the "Sweeping Fleet" in Frankfurt , in which people undergoing substitution therapy take on cleaning tasks in the city under medical supervision. They thus contribute to a more well-maintained cityscape and increase safety, for example, through the professional removal of syringes.
Next steps are being specified
The working group will now quickly develop the agreed measures further in order to improve the situation surrounding the “Scentral” together with all those involved.
