City, police and drug support services consult after decision on “Scentral”
Immediately following the city council's decision on the motion "Scentral/Herrngarten – Strengthening Security and Support Together," the working group on security and prevention met on Friday. The goal is to sustainably improve the situation surrounding the "Scentral" drug support center in Herrngarten.
Common orientation framework adopted
Mayor Hanno Benz and Deputy Mayor Barbara Akdeniz explained the resolution, which they said provides a "good, broad framework." This will allow them to address the issues of safety and support together. "We must keep in mind both those affected by addiction and the residents who suffer from the situation – both groups have rights that must be respected," Benz emphasized.
An external perspective brings new impetus
Alexander Klein, head of the drug support department at the Frankfurt-based association Arbeits- und Erziehungshilfe eV, was invited as a guest. He described his assessments based on his work in Frankfurt. Benz emphasized that the external perspective provided valuable insights and enabled an objective evaluation of the situation.
Focus on structural and integration measures
Benz made it clear that consumption rooms must be planned from the outset to accommodate both intravenous and inhalational drug use. This places specific structural demands on the design.
Furthermore, the working group is examining additional integration measures. The "Sweeping Fleet" in Frankfurt , where people on opioid substitution therapy, under medical supervision, take on cleaning tasks in public spaces. In this way, they contribute to a more well-kept cityscape and increase safety, for example, by properly disposing of syringes.
Next steps will be specified
The working group will now quickly develop the agreed measures further in order to improve the situation around the “Scentral” together with all stakeholders.
