15th place at the German Team Championship in Magdeburg – Weiterstadt skat players particularly impress in their counterplay
The Skat players from Gräfenhausen achieved a remarkable success at the 54th German Team Championship in Magdeburg. With 23,342 points, the team from Weiterstadt finished in 15th place, making them the best of the seven participating teams from Hesse.
A total of 75 teams from all over Germany competed in the championship on October 17th and 18th, 2026. All teams had previously had to qualify for the tournament through a two-stage qualification process.
Strong performance over six game series
Martin Steiger, Sascha Dechert, Thomas Brückner, Martina Schmidt and Andreas Färber took part for the Skatfreunde Gräfenhausen.
The participants had to complete a total of six series, each consisting of 48 games. A particular challenge was maintaining concentration and a consistently high level of play throughout the entire tournament.
After the Gräfenhausen team had already had to fight for their participation in the qualification round, they were able to hold their own in the top field of participants at the German Championship.
Although the result wasn't enough for a place on the podium or among the top ten teams, the team still achieved a positive result, finishing 15th overall and the best placement of all Hessian clubs.
Best result nationwide in the opposing match
The Skat players from Gräfenhausen were particularly successful in the so-called "counterplay." In this game, the two opposing players work together to prevent the soloist from achieving their objective.
In Magdeburg, the Gräfenhausen team managed to win a total of 138 games as opponents. This gave them the best result of all participating teams in this category.
This strength could also pay off in the coming season. The Gräfenhausen skat club has been promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga and aims to establish itself there.
Especially in league play, a successful counterplay is of great importance. Unlike in pure prize skat tournaments, lost games there are penalized with a double point deduction. Therefore, it can be particularly important to defeat opposing soloists.
The German champion comes from Neckarau
SG 1985 Neckarau secured the title of German Team Champion with a total of 26,722 points.
The other Hessian teams also fared differently in Magdeburg. "Ohne Vieren Borsdorf" finished in 16th place with 23,310 points, just behind Gräfenhausen.
Direkt Energie Eschborn finished in 23rd place with 23,075 points. 1. SC Dieburg, who had previously been relegated from the 1st Bundesliga, came in 29th with 22,789 points.
Last year's winner, "Thermalbad-Buben Bad Emstal," only managed 43rd place this time with 21,856 points. The Hessian team champions, "Die Reizenden Haaner," came in 47th with 21,686 points.
The “Charming Boys of Eppertshausen” finished the tournament in 59th place with 21,074 points.
