A lecture at the district office shows ways to protect against the consequences of climate change
District of Groß-Gerau – As part of the nationwide Climate Adaptation Week, a lecture on the topic of "Heavy Rain and Climate Change: How do we protect ourselves and our communities?" was held at the district administration office in Groß-Gerau. Experts from the district administration highlighted the regional impacts of climate change and provided practical tips for preventative measures.
Clara Hemming (Climate Protection Department), Frederik Kurtin (Lower Water Authority Department) and Andreas Reitz (Operational Planning and Disaster Control Department) impressively demonstrated how important early adaptation is.
Sponge city as a future-oriented model
A key topic was the concept of the sponge city , which generated considerable interest. This urban planning approach focuses on storing rainwater locally, allowing it to seep into the ground and evaporate, instead of quickly draining it away. This effectively reduces flooding in urban areas.
In addition to municipal measures, the speakers also emphasized personal precautions : homeowners can protect themselves, for example, through backflow prevention devices, waterproof basement windows, or emergency plans.
Disaster relief and personal preparedness
Finally, it was explained how the Groß-Gerau district would react in the event of a disaster and what disaster relief measures are planned. The participants asked numerous questions – a sign that the topic has resonated in the region.
“The increase in extreme weather events is also noticeable here. With events like these, we want to raise awareness, inform, and develop solutions together with our citizens. Climate protection is global. Climate adaptation has a local impact,” emphasized Clara Hemming, the district's climate adaptation manager.
The project was funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) German Adaptation Strategy to Climate Change (DAS)
