Redesign of Lindenhofstrasse and Mühlstrasse as well as Woogsplatz
The city council of Darmstadt, a city of science, approved the preliminary plans for the redesign of Lindenhofstrasse, Mühlstrasse, and Woogsplatz at its most recent meeting (February 22). This further advances the sustainable redevelopment of the Kapellplatz district.
This measure is part of the urban development program “Growth and sustainable renewal” in the funding area “Kapellplatz/Woogsviertel/Ostbahnhof” and is jointly financed by the federal government, the state of Hesse and the city of Darmstadt.
The aim of the planned redesign is to create a better quality of life for the citizens and to transform the two streets and the Woogsplatz into attractive, versatile open spaces.
Planning Director Michael Kolmer explains: “With the redesign of Lindenhofstrasse, Mühlstrasse, and Woogsplatz, we want to sustainably enhance the neighborhood. Our goal is to create more inviting public spaces and green areas. These measures are an important step towards making the neighborhood future-proof and climate-friendly for its residents. They improve the quality of life for everyone.”
Part of the package of measures is the repurposing of Woogsplatz, currently used as a parking lot, into a central neighborhood square. This square is planned as a combination of open spaces, green islands, and wooden seating platforms. The historic gate and the foundation stone of the former gymnasium at Woogsplatz, dating from 1901, will also be returned to their original location, serving as a reminder of the square's past.
Another measure is the introduction of traffic-calmed zones: Lindenhofstraße between Teichhausstraße and Mühlstraße, as well as Mühlstraße between Kleiner Woog and Lindenhofstraße, will be designated as traffic-calmed zones. Mühlstraße will in future be accessible only to residents, delivery vehicles, garbage trucks, and emergency vehicles.
At the same time, Lindenhofstraße is to become a designated "school street." For this purpose, a row of bollards, including a retractable bollard, will be installed on Lindenhofstraße immediately behind the entrance to the western Mercksplatz. This bollard will close Lindenhofstraße for two hours each morning before school and daycare start. During the remaining time, the bollard will be raised, allowing access to the street. This measure aims to optimize drop-off and pick-up traffic.
As part of an early and comprehensive participatory process, the residents of the district were able to contribute their ideas and suggestions from the very beginning. Also, the
"Local Partnership," a group of interested and committed initiatives, associations, and property owners, has been actively involved in this process from the outset and represents an important participatory instrument. Further funding applications will be submitted to finance the measures and ensure their full implementation. The Parks and Green Spaces Department and the Mobility and Civil Engineering Department of the City of Darmstadt, in cooperation with the Urban Planning Office, will soon begin the design and implementation planning.
"The new Heinrich-Hoffmann primary school, complete with a daycare center and outdoor play areas, has already brought about positive changes in the neighborhood. The upcoming redesign of the old town area will further transform and enhance it in the coming years," Kolmer concluded.
