SV Darmstadt 98 celebrated their second consecutive home victory. The Lilies defeated Energie Cottbus 3-1 (1-1) at the Böllenfalltor stadium, demonstrating resilience after conceding an early goal. In a hard-fought and open match, goals from Noah Weißhaupt, Aleksandar Vukotic, and Lars Lührs secured three crucial points. This brings the South Hessian side to seven points after a difficult start to the season.
The match started anything but well for the home side. As early as the fourth minute, Justin Butler capitalized on a positional error by Vukotic in the Darmstadt defense, slotting the ball past Marcel Schuhen to give the visitors the lead. Cottbus continued to pose a threat, repeatedly troubling the Lilies' defense. Schuhen had to demonstrate his skill several times to prevent a larger deficit.
But Darmstadt also pushed forward and were rewarded in the 36th minute. After a long ball, Ho-jae Lee broke through and cut the ball back from the byline to Noah Weißhaupt, who slotted home to make it 1-1. The equalizer noticeably boosted the Lilies' confidence, resulting in an open game until halftime.
After the break, the home side initially took the initiative more often, although the visitors didn't let up in their attacking efforts. Both teams continued to push forward, but the decisive goal remained elusive for a long time.
In the 77th minute, Aleksandar Vukotic finally redeemed himself for his early mistake. The center-back rose high and headed the ball into the net to give his team a much-celebrated 2-1 lead. Ten minutes later, Lars Lührs sealed the victory: After a combination down the left flank, Petretta found the onrushing Lührs, who finished inside the penalty area to make it 3-1.
After the difficult past few weeks, the second consecutive home win is an important signal for Darmstadt. Although the team showed some weaknesses against Cottbus, they once again demonstrated commitment and the will to overcome adversity. With seven points in hand, they now travel to Karlsruhe next Sunday for their away match against Karlsruher SC.
