Redesign of Oberstraße improves conditions for cyclists and pedestrians – federal and state governments are funding the 2.4 million euro project
The redesign of the streetscape on the southern edge of Stockstadt am Rhein has been completed. After the area was opened to traffic, the new infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians has now been officially inaugurated. A total of approximately €2.4 million was invested in the project.
The inauguration was attended by, among others, the First Deputy District Administrator Adil Oyan, Mayor Thomas Raschel, as well as representatives of the municipality, the district of Groß-Gerau and the planning office involved.
New cycle lanes and safer crossings
As part of the redesign, the street space, previously geared primarily towards car traffic, was reconfigured. Where there was previously a wide roadway without continuous paths for cyclists and pedestrians, there are now clearly marked cycle lanes and a new sidewalk on the west side of Oberstraße.
In addition, new crossing options have been installed to make crossing the street easier and safer. Bicycle parking facilities have also been expanded at two bus stops. This is intended to make combining cycling and public transport more attractive.
First Deputy District Administrator Adil Oyan described the completion as another step towards making the Groß-Gerau district more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly. "We want to offer people in the district attractive alternatives to the car in their everyday lives," Oyan explained.
At the same time, he thanked the residents and business owners for their understanding during the construction work, which involved some disruptions.
The federal and state governments will cover the majority of the costs
The total cost of the construction project amounts to approximately 2.4 million euros. A significant portion is covered by subsidies from the federal government and the state of Hesse.
After deducting subsidies, the district of Groß-Gerau is expected to contribute approximately €175,000, while the municipality of Stockstadt will cover about €425,000. The final figures are subject to final review.
According to current calculations, this means that the district and municipality will bear approximately €600,000. The remaining costs will be financed through subsidies.
Collaboration of several participants
At the inauguration, Mayor Thomas Raschel emphasized the cooperation between the participating institutions. In addition to the district and municipality, Hessen Mobil, the planning office, the construction company, the traffic working group, and the Stockstadt cycling forum were also involved in the planning and implementation.
Raschel described the project as an example of successful municipal cooperation. Even challenges that arose during the construction phase were successfully overcome together.
With the official inauguration, the redesign of Oberstraße in the south of Stockstadt is complete.
