Environmental department warns of impacts on nature and infrastructure – please report any sightings
The invasive ant species Tapinoma magnum has been detected for the first time in the city of Darmstadt, a city known for its scientific research. Following reports from residents, an expert confirmed the infestation north of Noackstrasse in the Lincoln settlement . This species, which originates from the Mediterranean region, prefers to spread in habitats altered by human activity – often in paved areas, industrial facilities, or even inside buildings.
Aggressive spread threatens native species
“The consequences for nature can be severe,” warns environmental officer Michael Kolmer . “ Native ant species , which perform important functions in our ecosystems, are being displaced by the strong competitive power of Tapinoma magnum.” Kolmer appeals to all citizens to only commission specialist companies and only after clear identification by experts .
This is how you can recognize Tapinoma magnum
- Completely dyed black
- Forms supercolonies with a very large number of worker bees
- Large mounds of rubble, e.g. between paving stones
- Intense ant trails, often multi-laned and heavily frequented
- Very fast response to disturbances at the nest entrance
- Worker bees of different sizes within a colony
Reliable identification is only possible experts
