The city and district are responding with measures – citizens are asked to help
Reinheim The invasive ant species Tapinoma magnum at the Gersprenz School . An expert report commissioned by the Darmstadt-Dieburg district conducted by biologist Dr. Felke concluded that the species likely originates from the Mediterranean region and was probably introduced via imported plants – a flowerpot from a garden center is considered a particularly likely source.
Initial measures are already underway
pest control measures have been underway at the Gersprenz School for several weeks . The city of Reinheim is also monitoring public areas and will intervene immediately if an infestation is detected. In particular, checks are being carried out in the areas around Bahnhofstraße, Jahnstraße, Heinrichstraße, and Friedrichstraße to see if the ants are spreading through cracks in the road surface.
Owners are responsible on private property
to intervene on private property . Property owners must take action themselves and, if necessary, specialist companies Manuel Feick emphasized the importance of everyone involved taking responsibility:
"The pest control can only succeed if the city, the district, experts, and the public work closely and continuously together. We will also be posting informational posters in the affected area to raise awareness."
Information, registration form and support online
In the next few days, the city will set a dedicated information section on its website. The following will be provided there:
- Identifying characteristics and control instructions for Tapinoma magnum
- Contact addresses for comments and questions
- An online form to commission an expert to determine the ant species (costs are borne by the owner)
Since many ants observed in the urban area do not automatically belong to the species Tapinoma magnum , expert identification is crucial in order to take targeted action.
