Commemoration of the 1959 Tibetan uprising – a symbol of human rights
March 10th is the global day of action for Tibet. Reinheim is participating in the flag campaign, in which over 450 municipalities across Germany raise the Tibetan flag to show solidarity with the Tibetan people.
“Of course, we too are showing our support for Tibet, to send a message of solidarity and for the right to self-determination, as well as to draw attention to the protection of the human rights of the Tibetan people,” emphasizes Mayor Manuel Feick .
Background of the day of action
10 , 1959, marks the bloody suppression of the popular uprising against the Chinese occupation of Tibet . Since the invasion of Chinese troops in the autumn of 1950, Tibet has been under control in violation of international law. 87,000 Tibetans lost their lives in the uprising , and the Dalai Lama was forced into exile in India . To this day, Tibet is subject to a massive policy of repression, manifested in state surveillance, re-education camps, and a ban on the Tibetan flag .
By raising the Tibetan flag, Reinheim, together with numerous cities and municipalities, commemorates the courage of the Tibetan population and demands respect for human rights and the right to self-determination .
