An open discussion evening at the EPES gallery in Darmstadt invites you to a discussion about contemporary art
What makes a work of art? Why do some things touch us immediately, while others raise questions or provoke us? These questions and contemporary art will be the focus of an event on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 7 p.m. at the EPES Gallery | City Wall Gallery in Darmstadt.
The gallery invites you to an open discussion evening entitled "CONTEMPORARY ART – What is Art?". Journalist and PR consultant Martina Noltemeier will be in conversation with artist, photographer, and graduate designer Florian Albrecht-Schoeck and gallery owner Katja Epes.
The gallery is currently showing the solo exhibition “Awakening in Color” featuring works by the Swiss artist Antonio Wehrli.
What is contemporary art?
The discussion will focus on, among other things, what makes a work art and why art is perceived so differently. Must it be immediately understandable? Must it be pleasing? And what happens when a work is unsettling or encourages a second look?
“Art doesn’t always have to be immediately understandable. For me, it begins where it triggers something in us: joy, curiosity, irritation, and the desire to look a second time,” says gallery owner Katja Epes.
The evening is designed as an open discussion. The audience is also invited to actively participate in the discussion, ask questions, and contribute their own thoughts.
